The last few years have seen plenty of Super Robot Wars games translated into English, some of which make for excellent entry-points to the series. To play the rest you’ll need to track down the Asian English versions of the three games that were sold in places like Singapore. The Japanese versions of V and X are in English, but only on the Switch. They’re all far from the series’ best, but newcomers won’t mind the complete lack of ambition and just how much is recycled from earlier games. Though all three games are available in English, getting your hands on copies can be a bit expensive. Best to pick whichever one contains anime series you want to experience in strategy RPG form. Though all decent games with eye-catching HD animation, they clearly suffer from a yearly release schedule and end up sharing a lot of storylines. Super Robot Wars V has more of a post-apocalyptic setting and heavily features Space Battleship Yamato, Might Gaine, Cross Ange and other anime that’d show up again in later entries. Super Robot Wars X, for example, has characters from anime like Code Geass and Gundam: Reconguista in G whisked away to a fantasy setting, while Super Robot Wars T has Captain Harlock and the Cowboy Bebop crew teaming up on Mars. Starting with Super Robot Wars V, these games were released in English and all feature the same solid gameplay mechanics with slightly different settings and anime adaptations. If you want to play through all the missions you’re looking at close to 100 hours of gameplay, which can turn into a bit of a slog.įor something a bit shorter (but still around 50 hours to clear), there was a trio of titles released for the PS4, Switch and, in the case of the first two games, the Vita. It shifts the series to a more non-linear style where players can tackle missions in any order, so if there are any storylines that don’t interest you, it’s possible to straight-up skip them. With a nice line-up of robots and excellent animation, Super Robot Wars 30 makes for a excellent entry point to the series, with plenty of quality of life improvements like automatic battles that make things easier for newcomers. As a stand-alone story, it brings together a wide variety of classic robot anime series like Combattler V and Heavy Metal L-Gaim as well as newer anime like Gridman and Majestic Prince. Super Robot Wars 30 is by far the most easily accessible title in English, as it’s available on Steam around the world and the Switch and PlayStation 4 versions of the game have English included as well. It’s not the 30th entry in the series, but rather an anniversary title released for the series’ 30th anniversary. Last year’s Super Robot Wars 30 fits at least one of those criteria. If you’re a newcomer, you probably want to start with the latest and greatest entry in the series.
